BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- "The Angry Birds Movie 2" by Rovio Animation and Sony Pictures Animation will hit Chinese mainland big screens, Rovio Entertainment announced.

A sequel to "Angry Birds" (2016), the new film is loosely based on Rovio's Angry Birds video game series but will see the birds and piggies team up against new enemies.

The 2016 film grossed over 500 million yuan (about 73 million U.S. dollars) at the Chinese mainland box office.

The opening date of the new film on the mainland has yet to be announced.
