NEW DELHI, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- India's national capital Delhi has been put on flood alert as the river Yamuna's water level continued to rise on Monday.

The Delhi government called an emergency meeting on Monday to assess the present situation in the capital as the river Yamuna crosses the warning level.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted "Am meeting officers from all concerned depts at 1 pm to assess the situation and the preparations."

The water has been released from the Hathini Kund barrage in Delhi's neighbouring state of Haryana which has further increased the water level of Yamuna.

The authorities have asked people living in low-lying areas to move to safer places.

"I appeal the people not to be sacred and would also request those living in flood plains to move to safer places and stay in tents. We have arranged 2,120 tents: Delhi Chief Minister," retweeted Kejriwal.
