BEIJING, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese researchers have developed a noninvasive smart headband to detect blood oxygen levels in the brain.

It can give warnings if the patient is at a higher risk of a stroke and some other medical conditions.

According to researchers from the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, they published the Human Brainnetome Atlas in 2016. It decoded functions of different brain regions, providing "precise navigation" for complex brain research and treatment.

Based on the atlas and artificial intelligence algorithms, the headband, by using near infrared and high sensitive sensors, can detect and collect data of blood oxygen levels in the brain in a noninvasive way even when the signals are weak.

The researchers said the smart headband can avoid complications caused by invasive procedures like jugular vein and carotid artery puncture.

The headband has been in trial in several prestigious hospitals in China including Peking Union Medical College Hospital. Initial results show that the device can provide accurate and continuous records of blood oxygen levels in the brain in a real-time manner.
