WELLINGTON, June 6 (Xinhua) -- One person died and three were injured following a firearm-involved incident near Kawhia, New Zealand's North Island, on Thursday.

Police were called to a rural address about 4:00 a.m. local time following a report of four people being found injured, Detective Inspector Graham Pitkethley said in a statement.

Initial investigations found they may have sustained injuries from a firearm, and three others are reported to be in a moderate condition, Pitkethley said, adding one person is assisting police with their enquiries, and police are working to understand better the circumstances.

The public are encouraged to provide information to the police.
