RIO DE JANEIRO, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- The Brazilian government Thursday evening expressed condolences to Bangladesh over a fire in its capital city Dhaka that killed more than a hundred people.

"The Brazilian government took note with deep regret of the fire that occurred in the historic district of Chawkbazar in Dhaka on the night of Feb. 20, which resulted in dozens of deaths and injuries," said the Brazilian Foreign Ministry in a statement.

The ministry said the Brazilian government conveyed its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, wished the wounded a speedy and complete recovery, and expressed its solidarity with Bangladesh and its people.

The fire, which claimed at least 110 lives and left dozens of others injured, reportedly started when a gas cylinder in a car exploded. The fire spread to a nearby restaurant with cylinders and a shop where chemicals were stored illegally, causing a wider fire in a residential neighborhood.
