ATHENS, Sept. 28 (Xinhua) -- A cold front with gale force winds and storms continued to sweep across Greece on Friday, with schools closed in many regions and ships moored at ports, Greek national news agency AMNA reported.

The cold front that started affecting the country on Tuesday has led to disruptions in ferry and train services for several hours, and sporadic power cuts as fallen trees knocked out power lines, while schools remained shut in Attica and many Aegean Sea islands as a precaution measure.

With a rare for Greece Mediterranean cyclone forecast to develop in western Greece on Friday and move to the mainland on Saturday, authorities have urged citizens to be vigilant for extreme weather phenomena and avoid unnecessary travels.

Meteorologists of the Athens National Observatory have warned that with winds up to 12 Beaufort, waves up to 11 meters high may be formed in the Aegean.

Emergency services have been put on alert for flooding, in particularly in recently fire-stricken areas in Attica, as the Fire Brigade has received hundreds of telephone calls mainly to remove fallen trees.
