JERUSALEM, March 18 (Xinhua) -- A knife-wielding Palestinian stabbed and seriously injured an Israeli man before he was shot dead in East Jerusalem on Sunday, the police said.

The incident took place in Hagar Street in the Old City, near the Iron Gate.

A police statement said that an Israeli in his 30s was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries. The assailant was shot and killed at the scene, the police said.

The incident was part of a renewed wave of violence in the region, sparked by United States President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on last Dec. 6.

On Friday, a Palestinian ran over Israeli soldiers near a West Bank settlement. Two soldiers were killed and another two were wounded in the attack.
