MADRID, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- A wildfire broke out Wednesday close to the popular holiday resorts of Pollenca and Port de Pollenca on the island of Mallorca has destroyed around 100 hectares of woodland and forced evacuation of around 60 homes, local emergency services confirmed on Thursday.

The causes of the fire remains unknown, but had spread quickly due to high winds as the storm christened "Bruno" swept across Spain and the Balearic Islands, with gusts of around 85 km an hour on Mallorca.

The fire remains active on Thursday morning, although the winds are predicted to die down in the coming hours, making firefighting easier.

The leader of the regional government of the Balearic Islands, Francina Armengol, showed her concern on Twitter and asked residents to show "maximum care and common sense and solidarity with the professionals who are working to extinguish the fire."
