FREETOWN, April 9 (Xinhua) -- The 27th Batch Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone on Thursday donated a consignment of medical supplies to the Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital, reaffirming a longstanding tradition of support to the country's health sector.
The donation covers key medications for multiple therapeutic areas, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, anti-infective, and digestive systems, as well as a substantial quantity of antimalarial drugs and antibiotics.
The donation further focuses on replenishing specialized consumables for the operating room, including precision absorbable sutures, disposable surgical packs, anesthesia supplies, as well as sterile gloves and syringes.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Li Zheng, leader of the medical team, expressed satisfaction in contributing medicines and equipment aimed at improving hospital operations and benefiting local communities.
He noted that the team has established a strong working relationship with their Sierra Leonean counterparts since arrival. Li further pledged continued donations, free medical outreach services to communities, and skills transfer initiatives throughout their 18-month stay.
Augustine Tarawally, medical superintendent of the hospital, commended the Chinese team for consistent contributions to Sierra Leone's healthcare system.
"The Chinese are friendly and have greatly contributed to transforming the health sector in Sierra Leone," he said, expressing gratitude for their timely support.
He added that while medicines at the hospital are sold on a cost-recovery basis, the donated supplies will be used to assist patients who cannot afford emergency care. ■
