DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 23 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba on Sunday urged the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology in the Arusha region to evolve into a hub of academic excellence and cutting-edge research focused on solving real-world challenges.

Speaking during the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new student hostel at the Tengeru campus, Nchemba cited homegrown innovations developed at the institution, including fish vaccines, seaweed-based fertilizers and agricultural drones for crop planting, saying such technologies enhance productivity and simplify daily life.

He called on the institution to prioritize practical skills, innovation and entrepreneurship so that graduates can create employment opportunities rather than depend solely on government jobs.

Nchemba also emphasized strengthened collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to expand the use of information and communication technologies, modern teaching systems and sound resource management to ensure sustainability and global competitiveness. ■
