LUSAKA, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- Zambia said on Wednesday that the outcomes of the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change represent clear progress toward strengthening climate ambition, finance, and global solidarity.

"As a country, we will continue to play a leading role in the multilateral climate process while ensuring that our communities, ecosystems, and economic sectors benefit from global climate action," said Minister of Green Economy and Environment Mike Mposha during a press briefing.

Mposha said the decision to triple adaptation finance to about 120 billion U.S. dollars by 2035 is significant, as it provides guidance to international financial institutions and donors on scaling up support for countries such as Zambia.

He further noted that Zambia endorsed the Tropical Forests Forever Facility, which received 5.5 billion dollars in pledges, marking a new era of global forest conservation led by the Global South.

According to Mposha, the COP30 outcomes carry significant benefits for Zambia, including increased access to adaptation finance, enhanced opportunities under compliance carbon markets through Article 6 bilateral agreements signed by the government, and greater prospects for forest conservation financing under the Tropical Forests Forever Facility initiative.

James Wakiaga, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) resident representative in Zambia, expressed that COP30 marked a significant milestone for global climate ambition.

Wakiaga noted that the outcomes are significant for Zambia, which is already experiencing severe climate impacts ranging from prolonged droughts to devastating floods.

He reaffirmed UNDP's commitment to supporting Zambia in implementing the outcomes of COP30 to ensure that global decisions translate into meaningful change on the ground.
