SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, April 26 (Xinhua) -- A civilian was killed Thursday after militants attacked a contingent of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The attack was carried out at Laizbal locality of Anantnag town, about 60 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Militants travelling in a car fired upon a contingent of CRPF deployed near Laizbal here. One of the bullets hit a civilian wounding him critically," a police official posted in Anantnag said. "The civilian was immediately removed to district hospital Anantnag, where from he was referred to SKIMS Srinagar for specialised treatment. He succumbed on way."

The paramilitary troopers have not suffered any damage due to the firing, police said.

Following the incident contingents of police and army rushed to the spot. However, militants had managed to escape from the spot.

On Wednesday militants killed a political leader and wounded two policemen serving as his security guards in adjacent Pulwama district.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
