Belarus calls EU criticism of its ban on illegal rallies biased

MINSK, March 27 (Xinhua) -- The Foreign Ministry of Belarus Tuesday said the statement by the European Union (EU) about the "disproportionate" reaction of Belarusian authorities to unauthorized rallies was biased.

Dmitry Mironchik, spokesperson for ministry, said all the authorized events held in Belarus on March 25 to mark the 100th anniversary of the republic were properly organized and held without any untoward incident.

"Given the events that have been taking place in the EU member states, the statement that the authorities' response to unauthorized rallies was disproportionate can be viewed at the very least as biased," Mironchik said.

On Tuesday, President Alexander Lukashenko told Interior Minister Igor Shunevich that any unauthorized action should be immediately stopped.

Earlier, the European External Action Service had said that the Belarusian authorities' reaction to the 100th anniversary celebrations was disproportionate because they allowed a festive event but banned a rally.
