ULAN BATOR, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Mongolian Foreign Minister Damdin Tsogtbaatar met with his Azerbaijani counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov in Baku to boost bilateral ties, the Mongolian Foreign Ministry said Tuesday.

The pair discussed issues including cooperation opportunities under the Belt and Road Initiative, according to a release by the ministry.

Proposed by China in 2013, the Belt and Road Initiative aims to create greater trade, infrastructure and people-to-people links between Asia, Europe, Africa and beyond by reviving and expanding the ancient Silk Road routes.

During the meeting, Tsogtbaatar said that Mongolia is willing to increase cooperation with Azerbaijan in such fields as trade and economy, culture, education, science and sport, the release said.

He invited Azerbaijan to join the multilateral agreement on the establishment of a think tank for landlocked developing countries in Ulan Bator, and also invited Mammadyarov to attend the opening ceremony of the center in June.

Mongolia and Azerbaijan established diplomatic ties on April 16, 1992.
